Tracking down the best pasties in Cornwall at Ann’s Pasties on the Lizard
For almost a year, I kid you not, I kept hearing whispers about Ann’s Pasties. Most of the time it was in hushed terms, like a well-guarded secret. And I couldn’t understand why. Perhaps the issue was about getting your hands on one given they’re in relatively short supply.
Indeed, Ann’s pasties are made by hand at the Pasty Barn in Helston and only sold here, at her shop on the Lizard and in a few other choice retailers.
So I finally decided to track them down and took off to the Lizard for a walk along the coast path, rewarded by one of Anne’s famed creations. Just follow your nose and keep an eye out for the bright yellow shop – you can’t miss it!
I seized the moment and bought two – one traditional steak and one cheese and onion. Both are encased in short, rustic pastry. The steak was stuffed full of quality meat with beautiful seasoning and just enough swede to compliment rather than quash the mix. The cheese and onion was an explosion of cheddery goodness.
Now I understand what all the whispers are about. These are pasties worth shouting about, but all the better for being kept a bit of a secret!
